Tweenology!

There's a particular stage in a person's life when they feel awkward. Not a little kid anymore but not a teenager yet. Well, welcome!  if you are in the 4th-6th Grade, you are probably in the tween age years!

This is to help you survive your tween-age years!

When kids hit their tweens, it’s normal for them to start asserting their own personalities and wanting to make their own choices, including what they are going to eat and when they are going to eat it. Often, this is the time kids drop the habit of eating breakfast before they leave the house. Because breakfast is so important, tweens should make sure there's something easy, quick and great tasting available. Tweens who have had something to eat in the morning are more active, alert and perform better in school, than those who haven't eaten- so remember to eat breakfast!

Exploring your creativity

With so much emphasis put on sports for tweens, I thought it was worth mentioning the importance of the arts in your lives. We are fortunate that Montessori de Oro has a very strong arts program (music, dance , hosting , yes the performing arts) and MdO have wonderful teachers who encourage students to explore their talents. Participating in the arts is a great way to build self confidence and self esteem. It has also been shown to improve academic performance.

Hydration

We all know how important it is to drink 6 to 8 glasses of water a day. But, do you pay attention to how much water you tweens are drinking? With all the other sugary beverages available, it's important to make sure you are drinking lots of water. Make sure water is available throughout the day. If you're into sports,  can't stress hydration enough.

Tweens and bodyspray

If you are a tweenage boy you know what I'm talking about! You are just as likely to have the scent of Axe  wafting through your home as you are Febreeze! Well I guess its better to wear bodyspray than to stink in the aircondtioned rooms of MdO. For those that are growing up fast,  its okay to ask your Parents to include you in their deodorant or antiperspirant budget also.It is part of growing up.

Tweens room style

As a tween we know you need to express yourself with fashion, music, and even your space! The interior design market is huge right now and there are endless options out there in every price range for you  to decorate your room with. Keep in mind functionality, versatility, quality and comfort. Don't underestimate the power of paint! It's an inexpensive way to completely redefine a space.Posters are fun too. Remember when you use fads whats cool today may not be cool tomorrow!

Grade school can be really rough for the organizationally challenged tween! More work, assignments, projects - It's a jungle out there! Try to  get it together by organizing, making lists, having the right supplies and not procrastinating. These are life skills that will not only benefit you as a tween now, but will help you when you become an  adult also.

Being a tween is fun too so enjoy your tweenage years!

Nutrition Month

Since its all about Nutrition this month of July, let's talk about how we can keep ourselves fit and healthy. The benefits of good nutrition are multiple. Besides helping you maintain a healthy weight, good nutrition is essential for the body and all its systems to function optimally for a lifetime. In fact, the benefits of good nutrition can be found in physical and mental health because a healthy diet provides energy, promotes good sleep, and gives the body what it needs to stay healthy. When you consider the benefits of good nutrition, it's easier to eat healthy.

Tips For Healthy Eating

  • A medium papaya contains 200% of your Vitamin C requirement A green pepper has more Vitamin C than a orange.

  • Whenever possible, eat raw fruits and vegetables. Vitamin C is very easily oxidized by air. In fact, orange juice and cantaloupe can lose half their Vitamin C content if not stored properly. Wrap tightly in plastic or store juice in a small container. This minimizes their exposure to air.

  • Tomatoes contain both Vitamin C and betacarotene. Both are powerful antioxidants.

  • Vitamin E is another powerful antioxidant. You can find it in sunflower seeds, wheat germ and fortified cereals.

  • Whole grain breads and cereals contain magnesium, iron, zinc, B Vitamins and fiber.

  • Good sources of folacin are broccoli, beans, spinach, romaine lettuce, eggs, and oranges.

  • Non-dairy sources of calcium are sweet potatoes, beans, broccoli collard greens, kale, tofu, salmon and sardines.

  • Do not take iron and calcium supplements at the same time. They bind together in your gut and your body can't absorb either of them!

  • Many vitamins do not dissolve in time to be absorbed by your body. Test yours by putting it in vinegar. If it doesn't dissolve in thirty minutes, it ends up in the septic tank.

7 new wonders of the world!

Last July 7, 2007, the 7 new wonders of the world was finally unveiled. Here are 7 new wonders that have been elected to represent global heritage throughout history:

1.The Pyramid at Chichen Itza(before 800 A.D.)  is the most famous Mayan temple city located  in Mexico. Its various structures- the pyramid of kukulkan, the Temple of Chac Mool, the Hall of the Thousand Pillars, and the Playing Field of the Prisoners. Chichen Itza symbolizes worship and knowledge.

2.The Great Wall of China(220 B.C. and 1368-1644 A.D.) was built to link existing fortifications into a united defense system and better keep invading Mongol Tribes out of China. It is the largest man-made monument ever   to have been built and it is disputed that it is the only one visible from space. Many thousands of people must have given their lives to build this colossal construction. The Great Wall of China is an incredible proof of Perseverance and Persistence.

 3. The Christ Redeemer (1937) is a statue of Jesus that stands 38 meters tall, atop the Corcovado mountain overlooking Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. It is one of the world's best-known monuments. It has become a symbol of the city and of the warmth of the Brazilian people, who receive visitors with open arms. The Christ Redeemer stands for welcoming and openness!

 4. Machu Picchu (1460-1470) -the city in the clouds was built by

the Incan Emperor Pachacutec. This settlement lies halfway up the Andes Plateau, deep in the Amazon jungle and above the Urubamba River. It was probably abandoned by the Incas because of a smallpox outbreak and, after the Spanish defeated the Incan Empire, the city remained 'lost' for over three centuries. It was rediscovered by Hiram Bingham in 1911. Machu Picchu symbolizes community and dedication!

 5. The Roman Colosseum (70-82 A.D.) is an amphitheater in the centre of Rome, Italy. It was built to give favors to successful legionnaires and to celebrate the glory of the Roman Empire. Its design and concept still stands to this very day, and virtually every modern sports stadium some 2,000 years later still bears the imprint of the Colosseum's original design. The Colosseum symbolizes joy and suffering!

6. Petra (9 B.C.-40 A.D.) is located on the edge of the Arabian Desert in Jordan. Petra was the capital of the Nabataean empire of King Aretas IV. Today, the Palace Tombs of Petra, with 42-meter-high Hellenistic temple facade on the El-Deir Monastery, are impressive examples of Middle Eastern culture. Petra symbolizes engineering and protection.

  7. The Taj Mahal (1630 A.D.) is located in Agra, India. The mausoleum was built on the orders of Shah Jahan, the fifth Muslim Mogul emperor, to honor the memory of his beloved late wife. Built out of white marble and standing in formally laid-out walled gardens, the Taj Mahal is regarded as the most perfect jewel of Muslim art in India. The Taj Mahal symbolizes love and passion!

WARNING!!!

Crazy facts you may have heard before, but they are worth a chuckle or two:

  • IF YOU YELLED FOR 8 YEARS,7 MONTHS AND 6 DAYS YOU WOULD HAVE PRODUCED ENOUGH SOUND ENERGY TO HEAT ONE CUP OF COFFEE. (Hardly seems worth it.)
  • IF YOU FARTED CONSISTENTLY FOR 6 YEARS AND 9 MONTHS, ENOUGH GAS IS PRODUCED TO CREATE THE ENERGY OF AN ATOMIC BOMB. (Now that's more like it! Joke! )
  • The Human heart creates enough pressure when it pumps blood out to the body to squirt blood 30 feet. (O.M.G.!!!)
  • A cockroach will live nine days without its head before it starves to death. (eeeww)
  • Banging your head against a wall uses 150 calories per hour. (Do not try this at home!)
  • The flea can jump 350 times its body length. It's like a human jumping the length of a football field.(hmmm...)
  • The catfish has over 27,000 taste buds. ( What could be so tasty on the bottom of a pond?)
  • Butterflies taste with their feet. ( Something I always wanted to know. )
  • Right-handed people live, on average, nine years longer than left-handed people. (If you're ambidextrous, do you split the difference?)
  • Elephants are the only animals that cannot jump. ( Okay, so that would be a good thing.)
  • A cat's urine glows under a black light. ( I wonder who was paid to figure that out?)
  • An ostrich's eye is bigger than its brain. ( I know some people like that.)
  • Starfish have no brains. (I know some people like that too.)
  • Polarbears are left-handed. ( If they switch, they'll live a lot longer. )

Now that you've smiled at least once, it's your turn to spread these crazy facts and send this to someone you want to bring a smile to, maybe even a chuckle.

In other words, send it to everyone!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Do Snakes Have Ears?

Snakes don't have ears that you can see. They don't have ear holes either.
So you'd never know from looking at a snake that it has ears. But kind of have an ear that's inside their head. It's located near their lower jaw.

A snake can hear voices but not very well as humans do. What a snake can hear are vibrations that come from the ground. These bound waves passes from the ground to the bones of their jaw and then to the bones of their ear. That's the way snakes picks up sounds.
Animals that have no ears:
Lizard - there are small ear holes behind its eyes.
Mole  - does'nt have ears outside.
Frog   - below and to the side of the eyes. You can even see their eardrums.
Bird    - it has ears hidden below the cheek feathers.
